• PATH OF PRAKRITI nennt sich die norwegische Band, die sich gerade ganz bequem und entspannt in meinem Wohnzimmer musizierender Weise breit macht. Aus den Boxen meiner Anlage heraus, meine ich. Eigentlich nicht das Thema für ein Metalwebzine, aber wir Metaller sind ja offen für GUTE Musik und entsprechend tolerant. Die Norweger spielen entgegen ihrer Herkunft keinen diabolischen Blackmetal oder etwas Artverwandtes, sondern elegischen, verträumten Singer / Songwriter Psyche und Acidfolk für einen Sonntag Morgen bei einer schönen Tasse Kaffee, ein paar Marmeladenbrötchen und optimistischer Stimmung. Die CD auf MERLINS NOSE RECORDS fühlt sich auch absolut unaktuell an, so, als wären wir im Jahre 1967 stehengeblieben und lauschten einer gerade den akustischen Kinderschuhen entwachsenen und in den Rockbereich gewechselten Folktruppe. Donovan und Neil Young sind zwei Aspekte ihres Sounds, das ist sehr offensichtlich. Es ist eben diese relaxte, frohlockend melancholische Morgenstimmung, die eine unermessliche Geborgenheit ausstrahlt. Die Hauptlast der Musik wird von akustischen Gitarren und Gesang getragen, dazu kommen leichte Rhythmen, mal ein Piano, mal eine cleane E Gitarre. Die Aufnahmen klingen leicht verwaschen, aber das passt in das Bild, die Augen aufzuschlagen und in den wunderschönen Tagesanfang zu blicken, während sich neben einem die Liebste wohlig schnurrend unter der Decke räkelt. Aber es geht auch versponnen psychedelisch wie beim ruhiger dahinfließenden "Dark horse" oder dem Acidrock von "Kingdom come". Diese mit Sitar und betörend mystischen, aber hell erleuchteten und friedvollen Melodien, zuweilen auch wunderschönen, dezenten Orgelläufen das Bewusstsein des Hörers erweiternden Stücke gewinnen auch so etwas wie die Oberhand in der zweiten Hälfte des Albums. Die wundersame Transformation einer Singer / Songwriter Band zu einer Psychedelicband vollzieht sich in wenigen Momenten auf diesem Album. Andere Bands hätten wohl Jahre gebraucht. Aber es ist schön, diverse Facetten der Kreativität einer jungen (2006 gegründet) Gruppe zu erleben, die Musik um der Musik Willen und ihrer Liebe zum Sound macht. In den 60ern hätten PATH OF PRAKRITI den perfekten Soundtrack für die Hippietreffen im Golden Gate Park und das lebendig bunte Treiben in Height Ashbury gemacht, wären neben PINK FLOYD als Teilnehmer an der Filmmusik zum verrückten "Zabriskie Point" positiv aufgefallen und inzwischen vielleicht eine Legende. So taucht man als unbedarfter Hörer immer Tiefer in den bunten Traumsound der jungen Norweger ein, lässt die verwaschene, verschwommene Oberfläche hinter sich und entdeckt Details und Facetten, die für unermessliche Schönheit stehen. Du kannst die Gruppe an sich auch nicht einfach nur einer oder zwei Bands zuordnen, die als künstlerische Vorbilder dienen, es ist vielmehr der Klang der Epoche, welchen sich PATHS OF PRAKRITI da auf die Kutte gekritzelt haben und deswegen hat man auf einmal Syd Barret, dann Donovan, dann Nick Drake, PINK FLOYD in ruhigeren Momenten oder Neil Young im Sinn, eventuell auch einmal die BYRDS, auf jeden Fall eben den Sound der psychedelischen Ära um 1967 bis 1970 herum. Mein Highlight ist das sehr spirituelle, sehr majestätische und betörend schöne "Oh surrender" fast am Ende der Scheibe, bei dem die Sitar, ein perkussiver, zurückhaltender Rhythmus, versponnener Leadsingsang, eine irgendwo im Hintergrund verbuddelte Orgel und eine ab und zu durchblitzende, aber ganz weit draußen stattfindende und nur leichte Effekte abschiessende E Gitarre eine Atmosphäre ultimativer Friedfertigkeit und Liebe aufbauen und die Sinne des gebannt lauschenden, wahrscheinlich schon längst über einer besseren, bunteren Welt schwebenden Psychefolkfans entgültig auf eine neue Ebene bringen. Ganz nackt ist dann quasi der Ausklang "Heaven and hell", wo liebenswerte Melodien von akustischer Gitarre und schnodderig verflogenem Gesang mit ein paar Geräuschen im Hintergrund den Singer / Songwriter Sound wieder hervorkramen. Angekommen. "Axis mundi" ist eine leise, der Hektik und verlogenen Oberflächlichkeit dieser Stresswelt entsagende Platte, deren Musik auf Bodenständigkeit, aber auch tiefster Spiritualität fußt. • As summer draws to an end and the days get shorter, Paths of Prakriti's début album is a great way of clinging to those memories of warm summer days. The album amalgamate's the 60s San Francisco sound but filtered through contemporary influences, while front man Jon Reier Stylte's vocals sooth the listener into a dreamlike state, the addition of flutes and organs help infuse the 60s influences that are present throughout the album. From the opening track 'Runaway Day' there is a clear influence of Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan that is a definitive factor which runs through the album. 'Axis Mundi' spans many genres from Folk, to Psychedelic via Blues it is a record which is bewitching and incredibly immersive, from the opening dreamlike note the bands sound envelopes the listener and allows them to float away on a blissful cloud. Their laid back vibes are positively uplifting. The album has a relaxed, hazy pace to it and the band is in no hurry to speed up the proceedings. One thing that makes this album refreshing is the emphasis on acoustic sounds; instead of blazing electric guitars and pummeling drums, we are offered a mix of calm acoustic strumming and escapist Sitar notes, with the latter occurring prominently throughout the album along with the theme of Meditation. There is something hypnotic about the Sitar, that the band wish to share with us. From Sienna Root to Bong and Colour Haze, more and more bands seem to be using this instrument to expand upon themes of meditation and reaching a higher level of consciousness. ~Reviewed by Saul Crowley for Doommantia (Sept 2011)

• Paths Of Prakriti est, comme son nom ne l’indique pas, un groupe en provenance de Norvège. Mais comme son nom l’indique, il pratique une musique psychédélique fortement imprégnée de sagesse orientale. En effet, le Prakriti est un mot sanscrit qui signifie la nature profonde des choses, la cause originelle des phénomènes du monde naturel. On est ici en pleine philosophie du Sāmkhya, une école de philosophie indienne orthodoxe qui s’est développée à partir du 4e siècle après J.C. J’en vois déjà qui tirent la gueule en se souvenant de leurs cours de philo et de tous les ennuis que leur ont causé Kant ou Hegel, alors je préfère arrêter la casse. Pour en revenir à Paths of Prakriti, on a donc affaire à une bande de doux hippies norvégiens qui n’ont rien à voir avec les tueurs de masse estivaux ou les satanistes brûleurs d’églises qui hantent parfois cette contrée prospère et enneigée. Jon Reiner Sylte est le principal penseur de ce groupe fondé à Trondheim lors de l’été 2006. Jon Reiner Sylte (guitare et chant) s’entoure de petits camarades tout comme lui hantés par l’hindouisme et la musique psychédélique américaine des Sixties : Ole Kristian Malmedal (orgue, synthétiseur, piano, chant et basse), Anders Bjermeland (orgue, synthétiseur, batterie et percussions) et Gunnhild Håndlykken Sylte (chant). Entre 2009 et 2011, Jon Reiner Sylte et ses comparses écrivent les morceaux qui vont constituer ce premier album. Deux ans pour parvenir à ce résultat : les gens de Paths Of Prakriti ont pris leur temps et ont soigné leur travail. Leur inspiration les a envoyés en plein Summer of Love ainsi que sur les pentes de l’Himalaya. Mais c’est surtout un doux parfum d’années 60 colorées et rêveuses que l’on sent sur leur musique, qui fait penser à la phase de l’ère psychédélique américaine où des groupes profondément inconnus comme Brigg, Lazy Smoke, Chameleon Church, Sagittarius, Peter Stark ou The Insect Trust ont développé des sonorités plus atmosphériques que le psychédélisme dans un premier temps hérité du garage rock. La musique de Paths Of Prakriti, nonchalante et décontractée, fait aussi penser au Brian Jonestown Massacre si on veut y trouver des influences plus contemporaines. Quelques morceaux un peu plus rythmés ("Kingdom come", le mystique et velvetien "Devils eye/Demons sigh") viennent nous sortir de notre tranquillité planante et introduisent de la variété dans un ensemble qui reste quand même très plaisant et très relaxant à écouter malgré quelques passages qui ont tendance à se répéter. Le dernier morceau s’appelle "Heaven and hell" mais il n’a rien à voir avec la chevauchée métallique de Black Sabbath, il donne plutôt dans le George Harrison béat et gentil. ~Reviewed by François Becquart for Music in Belgium (Oct 2011)

• Viaggiare a ritroso nel tempo pur rimanendo coscienti di vivere nel caotico 2011? E' assolutamente possibile. La musica è un tramite, un mezzo importante in tal senso, è capace di proiettare il nostro spirito in qualsiasi posto e mondo vogliamo, basta solo volerlo. Continua l'esplorazione del panorama acid/folk e psichedelico da parte della Merlins Nose Records e con mio gaudio posso godere di una release intima, elegante e splendidamente sixties/seventies come quella rilasciata dai Norvegesi di Trondheim Paths Of Prakriti intitolata "Axis Mundi". Sono emozioni e atmosfere che quelli della mia generazione (i trentenni di oggi) non hanno purtroppo potuto assaporare, quel senso di libertà e misticismo naturalista che gente come John Lennon, Neil Young e Donovan esaltavano si congiunge con la quieta ribellione fatta di pensiero che il cantastorie Bob Dylan, Lou Reed e i Velvet Underground, Nick Drake e la versione allucinata malinconica di Syd Barett erano capaci d'infondere all'interno dei propri brani. E' una visione continua e delicata quella che "Axis Mundi" nei suoi tre quarti d'ora di musica propaga come un'onda ellittica che tende ad allargare il diametro espandendosi e avvolgendoci, non c'è animosità, nessun segno di "lotta" stimolata da collera, le canzoni inneggiano a supporto di una dialettica distesa, rilassante e riflessiva, particolare già evidente nell' opener "Running Dry", rimarcata poi nelle divagazioni psych e acid di "Dark Horse" e "Kingdome Come". E' difficile non rimanere estasiati da un disco colmo di sfaccettature, cambi di umore lievi, in alcuni attimi appena accennati ma che appieno si fanno percepire nel fluire di un corso privo di filler, di pause, come il battito del cuore quest'immaginaria sezione di Woodstock rivive nelle note di "Outside Your Door" quanto in quelle di "Kali Has Woven", di "Devil Eye Demon Sigh" quanto in "Unborn Seas" e "The Streets And The Deep Below" grazie a una strumentazione calda, vivida, pulsante nella quale trovano spazio l'organo, il sitar, le percussioni e un mood acustico più intenso e predominante rispetto alle "intrusioni" di chitarra elettrica. Bella, significativa ed esplicativa di tale modo di porsi è l'accoppiata di canzoni finali: "Oh Surrender" una tavolozza in cui i colori si sparpagliano, è fantastica la maniera con la quale si fondono i vari fraseggi strumentali ognuno dei quali ricopre un ruolo preciso, definito senza invadere il territorio altrui, lo sfondo composto da organo e giri di chitarra trasmette una sensazione d'incanto rafforzata dai tratti orientaleggianti del sitar, è invece soft e scarno l'approccio di "Heaven And Hell" che ci conduce alla porta d'uscita di questo sogno in musica grazie a melodie aggraziate, voce carica di serenità e una propensione al positivo che fa spuntare con piacere un sorriso sul viso. I Paths Of Prakriti e "Axis Mundi" sono distanti anni luce dalla superficialità materialistica del vissuto odierno, con la loro esposizione sonora ci permettono di rientrare in contatto con una parte dell'essere umano spesso accantonata a favore "del tutto e subito", quella spiritualità che in qualsiasi forma rappresenti ognuno di noi andrebbe comunque valorizzata, che sia un monito per non dimenticare? Consiglio l'ascolto di questo piccolo gioiello a tutti coloro che amano realmente la buona musica, hippie, non hippie, poche storie, la qualità dell'arte non si discute, si adora e in questo caso si compra, supportateli. ~Reviewed by Mourning for Aristocrazia (Oct 2011)

• Åh, hvor er det dog fedt, at der stadig er nogle dygtige unge mennesker, som gider at arbejde med denne slags musik; introvert psykedelisk rock som den lød i slutningen af tresserne, med bevidsthedsudvidende lysshow i baggrunden og LSD i blodbanerne. Axis Mundi er centreret om Jon Reier Sylte på guitar, vokal og diverse, bakket op af to venner på orgler, trommer med videre. Rollerne synes ikke skarpt opdelt her. Nærværende album er indspillet i 2009-11 i Trondheim, men der er ikke meget moderne over lyden, og man behøver ikke læse pressemeddelelsen for at bemærke, at både The Velvet Underground og Bob Dylan indtager prominente pladser i hr. Syltes egen pladesamling. Paths of Prakriti er et album, som tager sig tid til meditativ fordybelse og på det nærmeste indbyder til hashrygning og urtete (eller rødvin, vælg selv). Det er gennemarbejdet og veludført, og iøvrigt ladet med hinduistisk ikonografi - hvor tit er De stødt på en sang med en titel som Kali Has Woven? • Doppelreview mit Amber's "Pearls of Amber": Irgendwie können die Geschichten um beide Bands nicht unterschiedlicher sein und dennoch haben sie sehr viel gemeinsam. Das Label “Merlin’s Nose” veröffentlicht zwei Perlen, die den wahren Metallern unter uns sicherlich verborgen bleiben werden, aber wer psychedelisch angerauchten Folk mag, BOB DYLAN und die BEATLES schätzt und nach stürmischen Zeiten einen ruhigen, entspannenden musikalischen Hafen ansteuern möchte, muss die Alben kaufen. Bei AMBER ist es so, dass die Aufnahmen bereits aus dem Jahre 1970/1971 datieren, aber 2000 erstmals als kleine Vinylauflage veröffentlicht wurden. Nun haben sich die Leute bei Merlins Nose gedacht, dass es Verschwendung sei, sowas in irgendeinem Regal versauern zu lassen. Und ja, das wäre es. Keith MacLeod hat die Sitar von DONOVAN geliehen bekommen, der sie wiederum von George Harrison (THE BEATLES) geschenkt bekam. Die Sitar trägt dich dann bei dem Opener “Sea shell rock me” davon, und die anderen Songs sind ein tolles Zeitdokument, was in London in den frühen Siebzigern möglich war. Warm und wundervoll. PATHS OF PRAKRITI klingen ebenfalls, als wären sie aus dem London der späten Sechziger entsprungen, wurden aber erst 2006 gegründet und die Songs auf diesem Album sind hauptsächlich zwischen 2009 und 2011 entstanden. BOB DYLAN und JOHN LENNON, das psychedelische Movement der Sechziger wird eingefangen in eine dermaßen authentische Produktion eingebettet, dass ich wirklich erst nachschauen musste, ob es sich auch um alte, längst vergessene Aufnahmen handelt. Die Songs sind tief und die eingesetzte Sitar dient mir als Bindeglied der beiden Bands. Entspannt wegtrippen könnt ihr hiermit ganz hervorragend. Für Fans der genannten Stilrichtung und Bands ist es sicherlich ein absoluter Pflichtkauf, wenngleich auch nicht die Hits der genannten Musiker reproduziert werden, sondern der Pioniergeist, das “Anderssein”, die orientalischen Einflüsse und der Mut, sich seinem inneren Frieden zu stellen. ~Reviewed by Chris for Amboss Magazin (Oct 2011)

• If I ever have problems to fall asleep or if inner restlessness is spreading, then I will listen to 'Axis Mundi' in the near future. And that's not meant in a negative way at all. What I am trying to say here is that the debut album of PATHS OF PRAKRITI is so significantly mellow and peaceful that it should be used by anti-aggression-trainings. I am confident that even the toughest guys will weave flower crowns while 'Axis Mundi' flows out of the speakers. Founded in Trondheim, Norway, in 2006 by Jon Reier Sylte, PATHS OF PRAKRITI is ensouled by the spirit of the 1960's. Add to this a little English psych-pop from the 1990's and then you have the musical foundation of PATHS OF PRAKRITI. The atmosphere throughout 'Axis Mundi' is haunting, enraptured and a little mysterious, while the music is majestic enough to support those slow songs. There are lots of acoustic guitars with piano backing them up and Jon Reier Sylte's fragile vocals float above the music. PATHS OF PRAKRITI's diverse instrumentation and carefully arranged tracks makes it a very flexible affair, capable of producing a variety of sonic textures. Sometimes I feel reminded of The Velvet Underground, even if 'Axis Mundi' is significantly quieter. But the music here has some of the same hypnotic quality and vulnerability. • "Paths of Prakriti were formed in the beginning of the summer of 2006 after recording a set of demos at an art school in Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. The band includes: Jon Reier Sylte, on guitar, vocals, tambourine, sitar, harmonica, drums, synth, organ; Ole Kristain Malmedal, on organ, drums and bass; and Anders Bjermeland, on African percussion, flute, and drums. The songs and words are basically the brainchild of Jon Reier Sylte and a collective of assisting friends and musicians " This is an interesting collection of psychedelic/folk tunes created in the 21st Century that harkens back to a time and era of music from the late 1960s and 70s. They even use the famous phrase made popular during that era, "Tune in, drop out". A line in the song, Kingdome Come pretty well sums up the feeling you get from listening to this album, "well I guess I lost it all to another time". You definitely feel like you've taken a time machine back to another time and place, but this time from a modern perspective. The guitar and sitar music on this album are excellent. The monotone vocals can get to you after a while. But like some great bands, the music is good enough to overcome the vocal sound. This is a good change of pace or change of pallet album that will provide some new notes and sounds. • Paths of Prakriti is rock/pop band from Norway that was founded in 2006. Their music has been influenced by 60’s folk and psychedelia (Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, John Lennon…) but also later music like Spiritualized and The Flaming Lips etc. Recorded between 2009 and 2011, Axis Mundi is basically a solo album by Jon Reier Sylte who has written all the songs, produced and recorded them and played most of the instruments and who also sings. The album does still also feature Ole Kristian Malmedal (organ, synth, piano, vocals, bass, drums), Anders Bjermeland (organ, synth, drums, percussion) and Gunnhild Hindlykken Sylte (vocals on ”Dark Horses”). The music is mainly rather laid-back and relaxing and doesn’t actually rock out at any time. Although the album is apparently pretty much a home-made affair it sounds pretty good and has a great vibe. I’m a bit bothered by the little out-of-tune element sometimes but on the other hand it gives some character to the music. The music is not overtly psychedelic but there’s enough of that to keep things interesting. The beautiful, melodic and ballad-like “Running Day” that starts off the album could well be The Soundtrack of Our Lives cover. Other great tunes are for example the following piece “There Is a Road”, the darker “Dark Horse” as well as the mystical “Oh Surrender” that has Eastern tones.  ~Reviewed by Dj Astro  for Psychotropic Zone (Feb 2012)

• PATHS OF PRAKRITI est un trio norvégien créé en 2006 à l’initiative du chanteur multi instrumentiste Jon Reier SYLTE qui s’entoure des organistes et percussionnistes Ole Kristian MALMEDAL et Anders BJERMELAND. En 2011, le groupe sort son premier album intitulé « Axis Mundi » sur le label Merlins Nose. La vue de la pochette semble ne pas vouloir cacher les préoccupations des musiciens qui visiblement n’ont pas fumé que des gitanes et bu que de l’eau : musique et nirvana afin d’atteindre le karma. Et musicalement nous y sommes. Dans un épais brouillard blanc à l’odeur suave et sucrée PATHS OF PRAKRITI nous propose une sorte d’acid folk psyché, une pop de type fin des années soixante. A l’écoute des douze chansons qui composent cet album, on pense rapidement aux BYRDS et aux BEATLES lorsque ces derniers s’intéressent de près à l’Orient à coup de LSD et de teush marocains. Les sonorités dissonantes par endroit évoquent le FLOYD de Syd BARRETT mais le côté sombre de cette œuvre rappelle le VELVET UNDERGROUND. Par moment apparaît des synthés et de la flûte qui donnent une touche progressive. Mais dans l’ensemble, « Axis Mundis » souffre d’un manque de relief et de saveur, au risque d’être vite gagné par l’ennui. Cette sensation est renforcée par la voix trop souvent linéaire et nasillarde de Jon Reier SYLTE. Dommage car « Axis Mundi » démarre bien, voire même très bien avec les sympathiques et agréables « Running Dry » et « There Is A Road » et sa belle partie de guitare acide et ensoleillée.
